Gems

Gems are the sacred crystals which can be collected by the Hero throughout the game. They're often invisible until passed over, and then will appear as small shimmering sparkles. There are 85 in total. When one is collected, the total appears for a short time at the top left of the screen.
Speaking to the Storyteller after collecting certain amounts of gems will unlock new dialog.
