===The Girl===

The girl can pick objects up, climb very short distances, and jump, though not very high. She lives in a two story house that is slowly revealed as the player progresses through the game.

===The Hero===

The Hero can roll and jump - but cannot engage in direct combat. It's necessary to outrun and outwit enemies while playing as the Hero.

===The Knight===

The knight can move right or left, but is not able to jump. Instead the Knight uses a grappling hook to move.

The Knight can attack and avoid attacks from enemies. Fighting enemies is based around proper timing as well as avoiding enemy attacks.

The Knight is invulnerable to damage for a brief period while rolling.

===The Old Man===

The Old Man is playable in one early scene. He cannot jump or roll and moves slowly.

The scene has the player slowly move down stairs from the top floor of his apartment building, while the narrator speaks.

===The Hiding Creature===

This sad hiding character can be found in the attic of the house where the player collects the [[Tools|Scythe]].  He wears a mask.  When interacted with he says:

===Astrid===

Astrid takes care of the Girl, and can be found in most sequences where the player is inside The Girl's house.

===Zack===

Zack is Astrid's partner, and lives with Astrid and the Girl, though he is at work all day.  He appears only in cutscenes.

===The Storyteller===

The Storyteller shares the story of the game, and shares more as the player collects [[Gems|Pain Crystals]]. The storyteller will tell the player how many more crystals are required to unlock the next story.

===The Cartographer===

The Cartographer can be found high in a treehouse. He tasks the player to get fuel for the generator and fix his elevators.

===The Cat===

The Cat can be found outside the gate in the first area The Man travels through, just before the first [[Enemies|enemy]] is encountered.

The Cat says he needs to go out, and requests the player open the metal gate he stands next to. To do so requires the [[Tools|Lever]]. 

After opening the gate, the player can shove the cat or leave it where it is.  This choice has a consequence in late-game.

===The Rabbit===

The Rabbit is a stuffed toy that The Girl finds behind a large box. The Rabbit speaks to the Girl, plays hide-and-seek, and frequently directs the Girl's actions.

During a tea party, the Rabbit calls the girl "Elizabeth."

===The Dark Haired Girl===

The Dark Haired Girl is a very sad character.  The Man meets her near the well, where she says she dropped a key.  She appears in cutscenes with Astrid and Zack.
